The amazing Digestive Systems job is to turn food into nutrients.
I am going to tell you how the digestive system works. The digestive system starts to work even before you take one bite! The saliva helps you digest because it makes it easier for the food to go down your esophagus. Now the digestion has started. If your esophagus didn't have muscles the food would never go down into your stomach. The muscle that helps the food go down your esophagus is called the peristalsis. When the food gets into your stomach, the stomach produces chemical juices that then turn the food into a watery liquid and it goes to your liver to continue the journey. The liver breaks down the fats in food. The liver and the pancreas both squeeze out juices through a tube. The pancreas's job is to squeeze the juice onto the food that is being digested, and then the food travels to your small intestine for its next step in the digestive system. The small intestine is almost at the end of this system. It is a long, thin tube that carries the liquid produced by the stomach and it also gets the liquids from the liver and the pancreas. Once the pancreas has done it's job, the food goes to the colon which is the beginning of the large intestine. The colon squeezes most of the water out of the waste. The wastes then go trough the large intestine. The last part of the digestive system is the large intestine which is a short, wide tube that carries the wastes to the rectum.
